Why I started A.A.T. Studios

A search for meaning, and a way to share what I find.

FOUNDER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Alexander Zheludev

At fifteen, I was troubled by how readily people could recognise the problems in modern life and still keep repeating them. I wanted to understand what was missing. That became a search I have followed for the last fifteen years, through philosophy, esoteric study, writing, art and conversations with other people.

I came to believe that we need a more active relationship with questions of meaning and with something beyond our immediate wants. A.A.T. Studios grew out of trying to make that part of ordinary life again.

Why stories?

People have their own reasons for thinking and living as they do. Telling someone what is wrong, even when you have a useful answer, rarely gives them the desire to change. They need an interest of their own.

I want to make work people would choose because it is funny, absorbing, strange or moving. A story has to work as a story. Its events can also give someone a way to recognise a habit, question an assumption or consider something they had overlooked in their own life. Essays let me explore the ideas directly, with enough explanation for someone coming to them for the first time.

The thinking behind the work

Hermetic and Neoplatonic philosophy are central to my work. I understand them as ways of approaching reality, consciousness and our relationship with what is higher than ourselves. Their language comes from another time; making it useful now requires care with translation, inherited interpretations and the meanings we bring to it.

I think modern life often neglects our capacity to examine ourselves from outside our immediate desires. Religious worldviews gave people a way to do this, even when the institutions and beliefs around them caused problems. I want to recover what is useful in that capacity and make it available to people in a form they can engage with today.

We interpret everything we experience. The trouble begins when we mistake those interpretations for the whole of reality. Learning to notice the difference can change how we respond to other people and to our own lives. I see that as a continuing responsibility, with no point at which we can simply announce that we have finished.

For me, that higher reality is what Neoplatonic thought calls the One. I believe we have a responsibility to keep seeking a clearer relationship with it, while recognising the limits of our own perspective. That effort matters to how we live with other people, as well as to our private understanding.

My aim is to make these questions understandable and relevant, while leaving each person room to develop a considered relationship with them. Interest, willingness and the choices that follow have to belong to that person.

How I make the work

I am the creative director of A.A.T. Studios. I use AI tools in research, brainstorming, drafting, visual development and audio production. They help me test ideas and find gaps; their contributions can influence the work. I decide what the work is trying to say, what changes, what stays and what is ready to share.

I work closely on the language and structure, sometimes revising a piece over days, weeks or months. These tools allow me to attempt work I could not currently afford to commission from a full production team. They do not remove my responsibility for what I publish.

This began with long-form material I was developing around my own interests. As I found it useful, I began asking how to make it available to other people. A.A.T. Studios is how I am doing that.

This website’s fantasy illustrations were developed with AI tools under Alexander’s direction. Individual works include their own production credits.
